OTW Post #2 & OR Post #3

As we watch the film On the Waterfront this week, consider the varying beliefs of the characters when it comes to what the difference is between a traitor and a whistle blower, or a "stool pigeon" and an "informant on criminal activity". In your 2 paragraph blog post, discuss what the characters believe about this question and then discuss what YOU believe about this question. When are you being a "tattle tale" and when are speaking out against what you believe is improper behavior?

This week when you post on your outside book, reflect on ethical choices that your person has to make in their life. Reflect on that person's code of ethics. These two separate posts should help in brainstorming your thesis for the ethical research paper.

And yes, you should have 2 posts this week. One for the "teacher question" and one for "outside reading". At the end of this week your blog should contain 2 posts on a teacher question and 3 posts for outside reading: a total of 5 posts.

Thanks, and happy blogging!

Blog Question Q2, #1: AMS

As we read/discuss All My Sons, consider how many of the characters make choices on how to act depending on whether it benefits their family or society. In your blog post this week, discuss how characters in the play decide what is more important (needs of family or needs of society). Please cite examples from the play to support your answer (1 paragraph). In your second paragraph, discuss your personal opinions on the matter. When is it appropriate to put the needs of your family before society (and vice versa)?

Quarter 2 Outside Reading

Literary Blog
The year long literary blog assignment continues during Quarter Two. I will continue to post occasional questions surrounding our class units on my blog. You are expected to post your assignments by 8:30AM Friday morning of the week the question is assigned and to comment on 3 peer posts (per blog assignment) by 7:00PM Sunday evening.

Outside Reading
The primary purpose of the blog is to use it as a vehicle for discussing your outside reading. This quarter you must choose a memoir, biography or autobiography that is at least 325 pages long for your outside reading assignment. Post about your book about every 2 weeks during the quarter, for a total of at least 6 posts on outside reading. Your posts should be at least 2 paragraphs in length, be analytical in nature and cite examples from your book using proper MLA format. Make connections between your book and the ethical dilemmas/issues/themes that we discuss in class during this quarter. You are expected to post your assignments by 8:30AM Friday morning (Nov. 14, 25, Dec. 12, 19, Jan. 9, 23) and to comment on peers posts by 7:00PM Sunday evening. Please refer to the “Year Long Literary Blog” assignment sheet for further details surrounding grading.

Post a Picture by 10-24!

Hello my budding photographers and film directors!

As discussed in class, please make 2 blog posts this week. One should be about an article/book you find and read about photography or films (something having to do with our visual literacy unit). The other blog assignment this week is to choose a topic and a statement you want to make about the topic through a photograph. Pre-plan your photograph using the visual techniques we learned this week. Take the photograph and then post it on your blog. Over the weekend, visit at least 3 other student blogs and analyze their pictures (what have they done and what is the effect?).

Ciao!

Blog Question #1

Please respond to ONE of the following questions regarding The Odyssey. Your blog post should be at least 2 paragraphs in length and contain 4 examples. The examples need not be cited, but they should be descriptive enough that we don't need to look them up from the text. Remember to follow the rule of the 50/50 split when it comes to examples versus analysis. This blog post, and your comments on 3 peer blogs, is due on 10-3-08.

1. Should Homer be considered an early feminist or an old-fashioned sexist? On one hand, Athena is a powerful, resourceful and respected character. On the other hand, Penelope is the stereotypical wife, sitting at home working on household chores while Odysseus sails the globe and has a lady in every port.

2. Is Odysseus a hero for modern times? His lies, pride and murderous ways can be considered metaphors for larger, universal truths. Or perhaps in these modern times we need to redefine what we want in our heroes.

3. Is the concept of Kleos relevant for a contemporary society? Family, a rewarding career, doing the right thing, enjoying life, these are what define a successful life - regardless of whether one achieves fame and fortune. Glory, fame, wealth, a long obituary and several chapters in the history book - regardless of whether one lived a happy life. What does a modern human want?
